Johnson House, Old Town San Diego, building in San Diego, United States of America

Welcome to the Johnson House, a reconstructed historic building located on La Plaza de Las Armas at 2706 San Diego Avenue in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park in San Diego, California. This guide will provide you with all the information you need to know about this fascinating attraction. The Johnson House was built in 1870 by George Alonzo Johnson, a steamboat captain on the Colorado River and owner of the Colorado Steam Navigation Company and of the Rancho Santa Maria de Los Peñasquitos. The building was a wood-frame pre-fabricated office building that was brought by ship to San Diego, which was typical of many American buildings in that area at that time. It had a false front and full-length wooden porch. Johnson built the building on a vacant lot on La Plaza de Las Armas, in Old Town, which was purchased from Tomasa Pico de Alvarado, his mother-in-law, in 1869. A few years after 1880, when the Johnsons lost their rancho to their creditors, they moved into this building on the plaza, where the captain died in 1903. The Johnson House was reconstructed in 1989 by California State Parks. The reconstruction was done to preserve the history of the building and to allow visitors to experience what life was like in San Diego during the late 1800s. The reconstruction was done using original materials and techniques, making it as authentic as possible. Today, the Johnson House operates as a park concession. When you visit the Johnson House, you will be transported back in time to the late 1800s. You will see how people lived and worked during that time period. The building has been restored to its original condition, complete with period furnishings and artifacts. You can take a self-guided tour of the building, or you can join a guided tour led by a knowledgeable docent.
