Château d'Oedenbourg

The ruins of this castle sit on a hilltop near Haut-Koenigsbourg and display remaining walls and Gothic window openings. The stone fortification is heavily weathered but offers insight into medieval construction techniques.

The fortification was built around 1250 and initially served under Frederick of Buren's rule. Over the following century, ownership changed hands several times before the site received its current name.

The place reflects medieval defense methods typical of the Alsace region at that time. Visitors can observe how the structure was designed to take advantage of its hillside position.

The site is accessible via a marked forest trail about five minutes walk from Haut-Koenigsbourg parking area. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear since the path goes uphill and the ground can be uneven.

Excavations beneath the visible ruins reveal that fortifications existed at this location as early as the 9th century. These older structures suggest the strategic position was valued for military use long before the current castle was built.
