The Marais d'Olonne extends over 115 hectares of wetlands, featuring extensive mudflats, lagoons with small islands, and salt meadows that support diverse wildlife.
The Conservatoire du Littoral acquired this land in June 2003, marking a significant step in protecting the natural heritage of the French Atlantic coast.
The marshland reflects centuries of human interaction through traditional salt production and aquaculture practices that have shaped its current landscape.
Visitors can access the site throughout the year, with management overseen by the Commune of Olonne and the Vendée General Council.
The site includes two large marshes totaling 86 hectares that received classification as a Reserve for Hunting and Wildlife in 2012.
