Vihren

The marble pyramid of Vihren Peak rises to 2914 meters, making it the highest point in the Pirin Mountains and the second-highest peak in Bulgaria.

The peak carried the name Eltepe until 1942, when local authorities changed its designation to Vihren, reflecting the strong winds that frequent the summit.

The peak holds position number two in the 100 Tourist Sites of Bulgaria program, representing the natural heritage of the Pirin mountain range.

The standard hiking route starts at Vihren Hut at 1950 meters elevation and follows red trail markers through a 7.5-kilometer round trip to the summit.

The northern face of Vihren contains Snezhnika, the southernmost permanent snow mass in Europe, persisting throughout summer in a protected hollow.
