The Cathedral Church of St. James is an Anglican cathedral in Toronto's Financial District with pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and stone walls modeled after English Gothic churches. The building consists of gray stone with a tall tower and slender windows that contain colored glass.
Construction of the church began in 1849 on the site of earlier wooden churches destroyed by fire and was completed in 1853. The Anglican community of Toronto chose this location as its main seat after the city became the provincial capital.
The congregation gathers here for services that follow Anglican liturgical traditions, accompanied by choral music and organ performances. The pews and altar windows display religious scenes that worshippers can observe during prayer.
The church stands on King Street East between modern office towers and is visible from several street approaches. Visitors can enter the interior on weekdays when services are not taking place.
The church tower was the tallest structure in the city for over a century and towered above surrounding buildings until the 1970s. Its bells still ring at set times over the financial district today.
