Blankenese Upper Lighthouse

The cylindrical concrete tower rises 40 meters above the Elbe River, featuring a white exterior with two horizontal red bands and a red lantern house.

Built in 1984 to replace outdated navigation aids, the lighthouse operated until 2020 when changes to the Elbe River fairway necessitated its replacement.

The lighthouse represents maritime engineering advancement in Hamburg, forming part of the Blankenese range lights system that guided vessels through the Elbe River.

Located at coordinates 53.55602 latitude and 9.81614 longitude, the lighthouse guided ships along the Elbe River with a range of 8.4 kilometers.

The eleven-ton lantern house required assembly by mobile crane and included specific lighting to make it visible to air traffic.
