Christian's Church

Christian's Church is a Rococo house of worship in Christianshavn with yellow brick walls and sandstone detailing that rises to a notable height. The interior is organized across three levels of galleries, all oriented toward the central altar.

Construction took place between 1754 and 1759 under architect Nicolai Eigtved and originally served the German community of Christianshavn. The name was later changed to honor King Christian VI, who enabled the district's founding.

The church is named after King Christian VI, the founder of the Christianshavn neighborhood, and features an interior layout arranged like a theater with the altar at its center. This theatrical design allows the space to serve both religious worship and concert performances.

The church welcomes visitors on most days and allows viewing of the interior during regular service times. Those interested should check opening hours beforehand, as religious services may occasionally affect visitor access.

Beneath the church lies a crypt with multiple burial chapels that have been in continuous use since the building's founding and houses historically significant figures. These underground spaces stand as a quiet testament to generations who lived in Copenhagen's streets.
