Gurage Zone, Administrative zone in Central Ethiopia
The zone extends across fertile lands between Mount Gurage and several neighboring regions, including Hadiya Zone and Oromia Region.
The region experienced substantial changes in its forest coverage, declining from 20% natural forest coverage in 1930 to limited preserved areas by 1996.
The Gurage people maintain distinct traditions centered around ensete cultivation, with different languages including Guragigna and Amharic used throughout the territory.
The zone contains 783 kilometers of all-weather roads and 281 kilometers of dry-weather roads, connecting Welkite with surrounding communities.
Local farmers initiated extensive eucalyptus tree planting programs in the 1960s, altering the landscape and providing new resources for the community.
