Borena Zone, Administrative zone in southern Oromia Region, Ethiopia

The Borena Zone extends over 45,434 square kilometers of land, sharing borders with Kenya, Southern Nations Region, West Guji, and the Somali Region.

The zone underwent significant administrative changes in 2003 when sections were separated to establish the new Guji Zone, followed by additional restructuring of woredas.

The population includes 88 percent Oromo people, with Protestant Christianity and traditional beliefs representing the main religious practices in the region.

The region contains three major mining operations: the Kebri Mangest and Lega Dembi gold mines, along with the Kenticha tantalum mine near Shakiso.

Traditional deep-water cisterns called Ellas serve as critical water sources throughout the lowlands, where surface water resources remain limited.
