Château d'Aguilar

Château d'Aguilar is a fortified castle built around a central keep enclosed by a five-sided outer wall with defensive towers at the corners. The structure sits on high ground and commands views across the surrounding valley.

The castle developed as a defensive stronghold on the French-Spanish border, changing hands between Catalan and French powers over centuries. Spanish forces captured it in 1525 and damaged it significantly, marking the end of its military importance.

The structure shows building styles from different periods, reflecting the influence of both Catalan rulers and later French royal architects. Walking through it, you can sense how power shifted back and forth across this border region.
