St. George's Church, Sélestat, Gothic church in Sélestat, France.
St. George's Church in Sélestat is a Gothic structure with stone walls and numerous stained glass windows filling its interior with colored light. The building extends approximately 65 meters in length and rises to a height of 60 meters.
Construction began in 1220 on the site of an earlier chapel from the Carolingian period that dated back to the 8th century. The building evolved in Gothic style and was completed over several centuries.
The Renaissance pulpit displays carved figures and ornate stone details that reflect local artistic skill from that period. These elements show how craftsmen created religious spaces that were both functional and decorative for the congregation.
The building is accessible throughout the year, and visitor groups can arrange guided tours in advance through the local tourist office. It helps to wear comfortable shoes since the interior floor can be uneven and climbing the tower stairs requires effort.
The tower once housed watchmen who monitored the city for fires and rang the hour bell. One guard faced consequences in 1886 for missing the quarter-hour bell.
