Abbazia di Sant'Angelo de Frigillo

The stone walls and semi-circular arches of Sant'Angelo de Frigillo abbey stand at 700 meters above sea level near the Vergari river and Mount Petrara.

Founded in 1217, the abbey functioned as a mother house to Santa Maria della Sambucina and controlled several Greek-rite monasteries in the Calabria region.

The abbey served as a manuscript production center under Emperor Frederick II's protection, creating illuminated books that spread Catholic teachings throughout the region.

The remaining walls and decorative fragments of the abbey are located at coordinates 39°4'54.51"N and 16°45'40.22"E in the Province of Crotone, Calabria.

After sustaining damage from earthquakes in 1349 and 1832, the monks returned to restore the structure, though it eventually became a rural church in 1795.
