Ryōtan-ji

Ryotan-ji Temple sits within a spacious complex featuring traditional Buddhist architecture and a classical Japanese garden designed by master landscaper Kobori Enshu.

Founded in 733 by Gyoki, the temple gained significance as the family temple of the Ii clan during the Heian period and received its current name in 1560.

The temple maintains the Ii family burial grounds and displays important cultural artifacts, including three volumes of Song Dynasty Buddhist texts designated as Important Cultural Properties.

The temple welcomes visitors from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM daily, except during August 15 and December 22-27, with parking available for 69 vehicles.

The temple features a distinctive corridor known as the Uguisu-bari, which produces sounds similar to bird songs when visitors walk across its wooden planks.
