Leo Tolstoy's Museum

Leo Tolstoy's Museum is housed in a residence in Moscow's Khamovniki District that displays the author's personal belongings, manuscripts, and photographs. The collection also includes first editions of his major works and reflects the life of one of Russia's most important writers.

The residence became Tolstoy's home from 1882 to 1901, during which he wrote many of his celebrated works. After he left, it was converted into a public museum in 1920 to preserve his literary legacy.

The house displays how Russian noble families lived in the 1800s, with furniture and rooms arranged exactly as they were during Tolstoy's time. Visitors see each corner as the writer himself experienced it day after day.

The museum is accessible most days of the week, with extended hours on certain days. It is advisable to check which rooms are currently open, as some areas may be closed for maintenance work at times.

The desk and study are preserved exactly as Tolstoy used them daily, complete with his notes and manuscripts that reveal his thinking process. This room offers direct insight into how he actually worked on his writing.
