George Washington's Gristmill, Historical gristmill in Fairfax County, United States.

The two-story stone gristmill contains multiple sets of millstones powered by a 16-foot water wheel inside protective walls.

George Washington built this merchant mill in 1771 along Dogue Run Creek, using lumber from Mount Vernon and river rocks from the Potomac.

The mill produced superfine flour for export to England and Portugal, while also providing cornmeal for Mount Vernon's residents and livestock.

The facility maintains regular operations on weekends during seasonal periods, demonstrating traditional grain processing methods from the 18th century.

In 1791, this mill became one of the first in America to implement the Evans automated system, which moved grain through mechanical processes.
