Whiteford Archeological Site
Whiteford Archeological Site, Archaeological site in Salina, United States.
The excavation area contains twelve to fifteen low mounds identified as house sites from the 1930s spread across an alluvial flood plain.
Benjamin Marlin discovered skeletal remains in 1873 while building a dugout home, leading to extensive excavations by Guy and Mabel Whiteford in 1936.
The burial pit contains over 140 skeletal remains along with pottery, grinding stones, corn, beans, stone tomahawks, and ceremonial flint knives.
The archaeological site, located between Smoky Hill and Saline Rivers, remains on private property and is currently closed to public access.
In 1990, authorities filled the burial pit with sand and covered it with cement to preserve the archaeological remains for future generations.
