Norfolk Southern Six Mile Bridge No. 58 is a railway bridge spanning the James River in Virginia, supported by five stone piers and a steel Pratt-type suspended truss structure. The crossing links Amherst County and Campbell County six miles downstream from Lynchburg.
Construction began in 1853 for the South Side Railroad and the bridge underwent several reconstructions to accommodate growing traffic. During the Civil War, it served strategic purposes and was deliberately burned in 1865 to protect Lynchburg from advancing forces.
The bridge earned recognition on both the National Register of Historic Places and Virginia Landmarks Register in 1995 for its engineering and transportation legacy.
Access is available from nearby roads following the James River, though the surrounding terrain can be quite steep in places. Keep in mind this is an active railway bridge, so up-close access may be limited or restricted.
The bridge was reconstructed after its destruction during the Civil War and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its survival and rebuilding represent an engineering and historical achievement worth noting.
