The district encompasses 66 contributing buildings and a site situated at the convergence of the North and South Forks of the Shenandoah River.
Established in 1849, the area transformed into a transportation center after the Manassas Gap Railroad arrived in 1854, connecting river and rail commerce.
The architectural landscape includes Mid-19th Century Revival and Late Victorian styles, with notable structures like Lackawanna and the Old Duncan Hotel.
The district covers 66 acres along Crisman Drive, Duck Street, Old Winchester Pike, Queens Highway, Riverside Drive, Rugby Street, and Strasburg Road.
The Carson Lime Company, founded by Irish immigrant Samuel Carson in 1868, built worker housing and a Queen Anne-style mansion within the district.
