Founded in 1719 during a gold rush near Córrego da Prainha, Cuiabá developed from a mining settlement into the capital of Mato Grosso state by 1818.
The architecture combines colonial influences with local materials, featuring landmarks such as the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Presbyterian Church.
The National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage maintains preservation efforts in the district, though several structures require maintenance and restoration work.
The district name originated from the Bororo indigenous word for arrow-fishing, reflecting the early inhabitants' connection to the regional waterways.
