Esquiline Necropolis, Ancient necropolis on Esquiline Hill, Rome, Italy

The archaeological excavation site spans across several areas including Piazza San Martino ai Monti and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II in Rome.

The burial ground operated from the eighth century BCE until 38 BCE, when Gaius Maecenas transformed the area into gardens under Augustus.

The burial artifacts reveal a shift toward aristocratic warrior traditions, similar to patterns observed in Etruscan and Campanian societies.

Excavated materials from the necropolis are now displayed at the Antiquarium Forense and Centrale Montemartini museums in Rome.

The site contains the earliest known historical scene in Roman fresco painting, discovered within one of the burial chambers.
