St. Mary's-By-The-Sea

St. Mary's-By-The-Sea features a cruciform layout with stone and stucco construction, including buttresses along the nave and a crenellated central tower at the crossing point.

The church, constructed in 1902 under the direction of English architect Henry Vaughan, replaced an earlier chapel that no longer met the needs of the growing summer congregation.

The church represents the architectural preferences of wealthy summer residents who funded religious buildings through subscriptions during the early twentieth century in Maine.

Located at 20 South Shore Road, the church maintains regular services and shares administrative functions with Saint Jude's Episcopal Church in Seal Harbor.

The granite used in constructing St. Mary's-By-The-Sea came from a local roadbed that the community determined needed lowering for transportation purposes.
