Marriott's Great America, Proposed amusement park along Interstate 95 in Savage, Maryland
The planned entertainment complex covered 850 acres with designs for multiple themed areas focusing on American history and recreation activities.
Marriott Corporation acquired the land in 1971 from The Rouse Company, intending to make it the centerpiece of their Great America theme park chain.
The development included plans for amphitheaters featuring animal shows, a 200-acre safari park, and a marine mammal park to educate visitors.
The project promised to generate over a billion dollars in revenue for the local economy and create 3,500 employment opportunities.
Despite extensive planning and land acquisition, the Howard County Zoning Board rejected the proposal in September 1972 due to environmental concerns.
