Rock castle Sloup

The sandstone rock formation rises 35 meters high, featuring carved rooms, passages, and terraces integrated into the natural stone structure.

First documented in 1324, the castle served as a defensive stronghold along the salt trade route from Meissen to Česká Lípa until Swedish forces damaged it in 1639.

From 1670 to 1785, hermits transformed the rock structure by carving additional rooms, creating a chapel, and establishing living spaces within the stone.

Guided tours take visitors through the carved dungeons, wells, passageways, and terraced walkways, with access to panoramic views of the Lusatian Mountains.

The castle contains a solar clock painted by hermit Václav on the southeast wall and includes three artificial caves carved into the sandstone formation.
