Driver's Seat, Steel sculpture in Old Town Chinatown, Portland, US
The Driver's Seat consists of a large abstract eye structure with a steering wheel and seat installation at Northwest 5th Avenue and Irving Street.
Created by artist Don Merkt in 1994, the sculpture received funding from Portland's Percent for Art program, Portland Development Commission, and TriMet.
The sculpture represents social responsibility by encouraging visitors to experience the sensation of steering through time while seated in the installation.
The steel structure measures 10 feet by 27 feet and includes an accessible seat with an inverted clock face on its reverse side.
The sculpture incorporates a functional seat behind the eye's iris, allowing visitors to view Portland Union Station's clock tower through the structure.
