Sar-e Pol

Sar-e Pol province stretches across 16,360 square kilometers of Afghanistan, with 75 percent of its territory consisting of mountainous and semi-mountainous terrain.

The region belonged to the Khanate of Bukhara from the early 16th century until the mid-18th century before becoming part of the Durrani Empire.

The province population includes Uzbeks, Hazaras, Pashtuns, Tajiks, and Arabs, with Uzbeks representing approximately 40 percent of the total inhabitants.

The province connects to major transportation routes through a highway linking its capital to the Mazar-e Sharif-Herat section of Highway One from Shiberghan.

Between 2005 and 2011, the province recorded substantial progress in education, with literacy rates increasing from 12 percent to 23 percent.
