Badghis Province

The Murghab River flows through the region, creating valleys between rolling hills divided by deep ravines across 20,591 square kilometers of land.

Before the Arab conquest in 709 AD, King Tarkhan Tirek ruled the Kingdom of Badghis and resisted the military campaigns of the Umayyad forces.

The province includes diverse communities of Tajiks, Pashtuns, Hazaras, Uzbeks, Turkmens, and Balochs, with Tajiks forming sixty-two percent of the population.

Agriculture forms the main economic activity in Badghis, with farmers cultivating pistachios, wheat, barley, maize, melons, and maintaining livestock including cattle and goats.

The name Badghis derives from the Persian term bad-khiz, reflecting the strong winds that characterize this elevated region at 1,589 meters above sea level.
