The Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mercy established the church between 1740 and 1754, initially operating in Saint Joseph Chapel for 20 years.
The church houses three sculptures attributed to the Brazilian artist Aleijadinho, including Saint Peter Nolasco, Saint Raymond Nonnatus, and a crucifix.
The church maintains regular visiting hours and stands adjacent to a cemetery established in 1828, allowing visitors to explore both historical structures.
The building underwent a complete reconstruction in the 19th century, replacing its original walls with stone masonry and adding a distinctive central tower.
