Burg Wildenstein, Medieval castle ruins in Bad Ischl, Austria

The stone remains of Burg Wildenstein stand on a rocky outcrop at 595 meters elevation, featuring remnants of towers and defensive walls with gothic elements.

Built in the 13th century, Burg Wildenstein served as the administrative center for salt production and jurisdiction in the Salzkammergut region until 1419.

The ruins hold a folk tale about a damsel waiting to be rescued from a nine-headed dragon during a full moon night at the castle.

The castle ruins remain accessible throughout the year, with hiking paths leading to the former fish ponds at nearby Teichwiese meadow.

Two major fires in 1593 and 1715 led to the abandonment of this fortress, which was the only castle in the inner Salzkammergut region.
