Braine-l'Alleud

Braine-l'Alleud is a municipality in Walloon Brabant, situated south of Brussels, and includes the districts of Lillois-Witterzée and Ophain-Bois-Seigneur-Isaac within its territory. The municipal area has a rural character with several village centers spread across gently rolling countryside.

The municipality was first mentioned in 1131 when Duke Godfrey I of Brabant transferred land to the Abbey of Gembloux. It was later marked by the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, an event that changed its history forever.

The Saint-Étienne church sits at the heart of the community and recalls its role as a field hospital during the Battle of Waterloo, shaping local memory. Visitors can sense how this past event continues to define the identity of the place and its people today.
