Wemindji T.II, Indigenous reserve in James Bay, Quebec, Canada

The Cree Nation of Wemindji sits at the mouth of the Maquatua River, extending across the eastern coast of James Bay in Quebec.

The settlement emerged from a trading post called Paakumshumwashtikw, established in the 17th century and relocated to its current location in 1959.

The name Wemindji derives from the Cree language, referencing the red pigment present in the surrounding hills of this indigenous territory.

The community maintains two educational institutions, health services, sports facilities, and connects to James Bay Road through a gravel route established in 1995.

The Cree Nation of Wemindji operates under its own governance structure with a chief, deputy chief, and five council members elected by community members.
