West, Administrative region in central-western Cameroon
The West Region covers 14,000 square kilometers of land characterized by rolling hills, valleys, and the Bamboutos Mountains reaching elevations of 2,740 meters.
The region was established in 1972 through administrative reorganization, consolidating territories of the Bamileke and Bamum kingdoms under a single framework.
The Bamileke people maintain traditional practices through pottery, textile production, and sculptures, while the Bamum follow Islamic customs under their sultan in Foumban.
The regional capital Bafoussam functions as the primary economic hub, hosting markets where farmers trade maize, plantains, coffee, and cocoa from local plantations.
Despite being the smallest of Cameroon's ten regions, the West Region maintains the highest population density and contains nearly 1,000 schools across its villages.
