Yarkant County

Yarkant County extends across 8,969 square kilometers at the southern edge of the Taklamakan Desert, containing fertile oases sustained by the Yarkand River.

The region transformed from a Buddhist kingdom into the capital of Yarkand Khanate between 1514 and 1680, serving as a central point along the southern Silk Road.

The county maintains a population of 860,800 residents, with Uyghur communities preserving traditional musical forms and agricultural practices across generations.

The agricultural sector produces cotton, wheat, corn, pomegranates, pears, apricots, and walnuts through irrigation systems, while livestock grazes in higher altitudes.

Natural resources in the county include deposits of natural gas, petroleum, gold, copper, lead, granite, and coal at an elevation of 1,232 meters.
