Hotan

The city lies at 1382 meters elevation within an oasis region, bordered by the Taklamakan Desert and crossed by multiple rivers that support local agriculture.

From 56 to 1006 CE, Hotan functioned as the capital of an independent Buddhist kingdom, connecting China with Central Asia through the Silk Road network.

The local population maintains traditional Uyghur crafts, particularly the production of high-grade jade objects, carpets, and silk textiles using generational techniques.

The Hotan Airport connects the city with major regional centers, while National Highway 315 provides ground transportation to neighboring urban areas.

Archaeological excavations at Melikawat, located 25 kilometers from the current city, reveal artifacts spanning 2000 years of continuous habitation.
