The Sonnenstein rises to 486 meters above sea level, featuring steep limestone cliffs on its western face and a treeless summit in the Ohm Hills.
After the fall of the Thuringian kingdom, the Sonnenstein marked the boundary between different populations, separating the medieval regions of Liesgau and Eichsfeld.
Local legends tell of a robber named Urban who lived in a cave near the mountain, leading to the construction of a medieval fortification called Urbenschanze.
Visitors can reach the summit via the L1011 road between Ecklingerode and Holungen or the L1012 road connecting Worbis to Jützenbach.
In 2017, a 14-meter-long skywalk was installed at the summit, extending 9 meters beyond the cliff edge for panoramic views of the region.
