Obélisque d'Arles, Roman obelisk in Place de la République, Arles, France
The granite monument rises 20 meters high, featuring a pedestal with four bronze lions at its corners and decorative water fountains at its base.
Originally placed in the Roman circus during the 4th century under Constantine II, the obelisk fell and broke into two pieces until its rediscovery in the 14th century.
The obelisk stands as a central element of Place de la République, surrounded by the Town Hall and Saint-Trophime Cathedral in the historical district of Arles.
Visitors can reach the monument by taking a TGV train from Paris to Avignon or Nîmes, followed by a local connection to Arles station.
The red granite structure from Asia Minor contains no inscriptions, making it different from most Roman obelisks found throughout the Mediterranean region.
