Massif de l'Hautil

The Hautil Massif extends over 1,250 hectares between the Seine and Oise valleys, reaching an elevation of 185 meters in the northern Yvelines department.

The area contains traces of Neolithic settlements and ancient Roman fortifications, including structures known as Camp de César near the current forest boundaries.

During the Middle Ages, the sunny slopes of the massif contained numerous vineyards that produced wine for the Parisian market until the 19th century.

The forest area includes marked trails for visitors, though certain sections remain restricted due to the presence of former underground gypsum quarries.

The massif contains a network of underground galleries stretching across 200 hectares, resulting from two centuries of gypsum mining that ended in the 1980s.
