Menhirs d'Époigny, Neolithic menhir alignment in Couches, France

Seven granite standing stones form a V-shaped configuration on a plateau overlooking the Dheune Valley, with the largest stone reaching 7.35 meters tall.

The stones were erected 5000 years ago during the Neolithic period, marking the boundary between the Saône and Loire river basins near ancient pathways.

The main menhir features southern-facing engravings depicting human figures, cup marks, and a stylized axe, representing Neolithic artistic expressions.

Located at 457 meters altitude, visitors can reach the site by following the Autun direction from Couches and turning toward Saint-Pierre-de-Varennes.

The granite blocks originated from the Bouvier massif, requiring prehistoric builders to transport stones weighing up to 30 tons across 8 kilometers.
