Hôpital Porte Madeleine d'Orléans

Hôpital Porte Madeleine is a former hospital and now a protected historical site in Orléans with buildings dating to the 17th century. The most notable structure is the chapel designed by architect Jacques V Gabriel and built between 1713 and 1717.

The hospital was founded in the 17th century and served as a regional medical facility for more than three centuries. It closed in 2015, with operations moving to a new location offering more comprehensive modern facilities.

The place takes its name from the Madeleine Gate in Orléans, a reference to its historical location. The chapel standing within the complex reflects how spiritual care was once integrated with medical treatment.

The site is now accessible to visitors and houses a health center that began operations in January 2021 providing medical services. The historical buildings are well preserved and can be viewed from outside, with the chapel being the main point of interest.

Beneath the grounds lie medieval limestone quarries approximately 12 meters (40 feet) deep, revealing that this location was an important stone extraction center for centuries. These underground chambers result from intensive mining activities spanning the 14th to 18th centuries.
