St. Thomas Mount, Religious hillock in Chennai, India
The 91-meter high mount features a church at its summit, connected by 160 stone steps with stations of the cross along the path.
Portuguese settlers constructed a shrine dedicated to Mother Mary at the summit in 1523, incorporating ancient stone crosses with Pahlavi inscriptions.
The site holds religious significance for Christians and Hindus, as it combines the legacy of St. Thomas with earlier Hindu sage Bhringi traditions.
Visitors can reach the mount through public transportation from Chennai International Airport, with the site remaining open daily for devotees and tourists.
The altar contains a stone cross that periodically displays unexplained red marks, leading to its designation as the Bleeding Cross.
