Portuguese Castle, Military fortress in Qeshm, Iran

The red stone fortress stands on Qeshm Island, featuring military quarters, a water reservoir, a prison, and commanding views of the Persian Gulf.

Portuguese commander Rui Freire de Andrada established this strategic fortification in 1621 to maintain control over maritime trade routes in the Persian Gulf.

The fortress incorporates both Portuguese colonial and Safavid architectural elements, utilizing local materials like stone, wood, and traditional saruj mortar in its construction.

Visitors can reach the fortress through Velayat Square, with several restaurants and hotels available within walking distance of the historical structure.

Archaeological excavations in 2008 revealed various artifacts within the fortress grounds, including Chinese utensils and Venetian glassware from different historical periods.
