Madonna dell'Orto, Gothic church in Cannaregio, Venice, Italy.
Madonna dell'Orto is a three-nave church made of brick with a large rose window on the facade, marble columns, and several chapels throughout the interior. The spaces hold religious paintings and sculptures, including significant works from the Renaissance period.
The church was founded in 1350 by a religious community and took its current name in 1414 after a statue of Madonna that was venerated as miraculous. A major rebuilding occurred at the end of the 14th century and shaped the appearance visitors see today.
This was once the parish church of working people in the neighborhood, and locals still value its connection to their community. The interior shows how wealthy families who lived nearby chose to decorate their own chapels with art and sculptures.
The church is located in the northern part of Venice and is accessible on foot from the main canals. Visitors should know that some areas inside are protected by railings and the lighting may be dimmed to protect the paintings.
The painter Tintoretto, one of Venice's greatest artists, created ten major works for this church and was also buried here. His connection to the place makes it a center for understanding his artistic style and influence.
