Kashima, Coastal city in Saga Prefecture, Japan
The city extends along the Ariake Sea shoreline with the Tara mountain range forming its southern border, covering 112 square kilometers of land.
The region belonged to Hizen Province during the Edo period, where the Nabeshima clan controlled the Kashima Domain until modern administrative changes.
The Yutoku Inari Shrine attracts three million annual visitors who participate in ceremonies like Hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the new year.
Travelers can reach Hizen-Kashima Station via the JR Limited Express Kamome from Hakata Station in 57 minutes or take buses from Saga Airport.
The Kashima Gatalympics sports event takes place every May on the mudflats of the Ariake Sea shoreline in Hama-chō district.
