Ukyō Ward, Administrative ward in Kyoto, Japan.
The Ukyō-ku ward extends across 292 square kilometers of northwestern Kyoto, containing mountains, rivers, and residential neighborhoods within its boundaries.
The ward was established in 1931 through the merger of nine villages, and later expanded in 2005 by incorporating the town of Keihoku.
The name Ukyō originates from the ward's position on the emperor's right side when he faced south from the Kyoto Imperial Palace.
The Katsura River flows through Ukyō-ku, connecting multiple districts and providing water resources to more than 200,000 residents across 97,000 households.
The Sagano neighborhood features a dedicated railway line that travels through forests and along mountain slopes in the western part of the ward.
