Yanagawa

Yanagawa contains an intricate network of 930 kilometers of canals that branch throughout the city, connecting neighborhoods and agricultural areas to the Chikugo River.

The city developed from a castle town in the late 16th century when the construction of Yanagawa Castle prompted the creation of canals for defense and water supply.

The Former Toshima House, constructed in 1828, displays traditional Japanese architecture and features a garden that incorporates water from the city canals.

Visitors can reach Yanagawa by taking a 50-minute train ride from Nishitetsu Fukuoka Station to Nishitetsu-Yanagawa Station in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture.

Local boatmen navigate traditional donkobune vessels through the canals while sharing stories and reciting poems by Yanagawa's celebrated poet Hakushu Kitahara.
