Nantan, City in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan

The city of Nantan spans across 616 square kilometers of mountainous terrain in central Kyoto Prefecture, with a population density of 50 people per square kilometer.

The land of current Nantan belonged to Tanba Province during the Nara period and contained the Sonobe Domain throughout the Edo Period administration system.

Nantan maintains traditional agricultural practices through the cultivation of specialized Kyoto vegetables, particularly mizuna, following centuries-old farming techniques.

The municipality operates seven elementary schools, five middle schools, and three public high schools, serving the educational needs of 30,744 residents across 14,406 households.

The Kayabuki no Sato district preserves traditional Japanese architecture through its collection of thatched-roof houses set against the mountain landscape.
