Erimo

Located in southern Hokkaido, Erimo features strong winds with average speeds of 8.3 meters per second and extensive kelp harvesting operations along its coastline.

The area transformed from a deforested zone known as Erimo Desert through a 40-year community restoration project that successfully reestablished native vegetation.

Local families maintain traditional kelp harvesting methods from July to September, contributing to 65 percent of Japan's total kelp production.

Visitors can reach Erimo by car in approximately four hours from Sapporo or two and a half hours from Obihiro via Route 336, known as The Golden Road.

The House of Wind Museum displays the effects of local wind patterns through eight large windows and offers opportunities to observe Kurile seals on nearby rocks.
