Yawatahama, Coastal city in Ehime Prefecture, Japan
Yawatahama stretches along the Uwa Sea with a ria coastline featuring steep slopes where capes and coves intersect across 132 square kilometers.
The area belonged to the Date clan during the Edo Period and gained prominence as a castle town and fishing port between 1603 and 1867.
The Honai Machinami district exhibits traditional Japanese architecture while the Doya Market displays the local fishing trade and seafood preparation methods.
The central Yawatahama Port provides regular ferry connections to Beppu and Usuki in Kyushu, serving as a major transportation link between Shikoku and Kyushu islands.
The city earned the title 'Manchester of Shikoku' following rapid industrial growth centered around silk production and deep-sea trawling operations.
