Nankoku, Administrative center in Kōchi Prefecture, Japan
Nankoku extends across 125 square kilometers between the Shikoku Mountains and Pacific Ocean, intersected by the Mononobe River flowing north to south.
The establishment of Nankoku as a city in October 1959 marked a period of administrative modernization in post-war Japanese municipal restructuring.
The former location of Tosa Kokubun-ji temple from the Nara period indicates Nankoku's position as a religious center in ancient Tosa Province.
The city provides educational services through thirteen elementary schools, four middle schools, and three public high schools for its 46,459 residents.
Ki no Tsurayuki composed the Tosa Diary while residing in this area, creating a notable work of classical Japanese literature.
