Nishiwaki, Industrial city in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan

Located 50 kilometers north of Kobe, Nishiwaki stretches across 132 square kilometers between the Chugoku Mountains and three flowing rivers: Kakogawa, Sugihara, and Noma.

During the Edo Period, Nishiwaki operated under direct administration of the Tokugawa shogunate until 1952 when it merged with Hino, Shigeharu, and Hiesho villages.

The city maintains eight elementary schools, four middle schools, and three high schools, with an active student exchange program with Renton, Washington since 1989.

Government buildings, including city hall, prefectural offices, and national institutions cluster in a central location, providing efficient access for the 39,001 residents.

Nishiwaki produces 70 percent of Japan's yarn-dyed textiles through the Banshu weaving technique, which originated in 1792 and remains the primary local industry.
