Minamimaki, Mountain village in Minamisaku District, Japan
Located between 1,000 and 1,500 meters in altitude, Minamimaki extends across 133 square kilometers in the Southern Yatsugatake Volcanic Group of eastern Nagano Prefecture.
The village of Minamimaki was formally established on April 1, 1889, during the nationwide reorganization of municipalities following the Meiji Restoration period.
The village maintains traditional agricultural practices and seasonal festivals that reflect the rural heritage of the Nagano mountain communities.
The Koumi Line railway and National Route 141 provide transportation access to Minamimaki, where winter temperatures frequently drop below freezing with substantial snowfall.
The Nobeyama Radio Observatory in Minamimaki houses scientific instruments for astronomical research at one of Japan's highest elevation research facilities.
